Painting Doubleview Homes
Doubleview is older than most of the suburbs around it. A lot of the original housing dates from the 1940s and 1950s, and the mix runs from weatherboard and fibro through to double brick.
That age brings a few things worth knowing before you get a quote:
Multiple layers of paint history: On a house that’s been standing seventy years, the exterior may have four or five different coating systems on it, some of them incompatible with each other. This is why an exterior repaint here needs a proper look before pricing. What’s under the current coat determines how much of it has to come off.
Original timber windows: Many Doubleview homes still have their original timber frames and sashes. Worth keeping where the timber is sound, and they repaint well, but they need attention at the sills and lower rails where water sits.
Fibro and weatherboard cladding: Both common, both needing different preparation to brick. Fibro sheeting from before the late 1980s may contain asbestos and must not be sanded or cut. Where we suspect it, we say so and work to an approach that doesn’t disturb it.
Renovation and Extension Painting
Doubleview has had a lot of renovation activity, and the most common job we get here isn’t a straight repaint. It’s matching new work to old.
Extensions and second-storey additions are the tricky ones. A new render or cladding section sitting next to sixty-year-old brickwork will not take paint the same way, and it will not weather the same way afterwards. Get the specification wrong and the join between old and new shows up within a couple of years, even if it looked seamless on handover.
We handle this by treating them as two substrates with one finished appearance rather than one job. Different primers where they’re needed, colour matched properly rather than by eye, and sheen matched as carefully as colour, because a difference in gloss level is more visible than a slight difference in shade.

Exposure in Doubleview
Doubleview sits on higher ground than much of the surrounding area, which means more exposure to the afternoon sea breeze rather than less. Homes on the western side of the suburb, particularly on the elevated streets, cop noticeably more weather than the sheltered pockets.
West and north-west walls fail first. Timber window frames and fascias on those elevations go before anything else, because the timber moves with the heat and the coating cracks along the joints.
On older weatherboard, this is where preparation earns its money. Caulking every joint properly is slow work and it’s the difference between a finish that holds for six years and one that opens up in two.

FAQ
My house has an extension. Can you match the paint?
Yes, and it’s a common job in Doubleview. Different substrates need different preparation but they can be finished to look identical. Sheen matters as much as colour, so we match both.
My house has fibro cladding. Is that an issue?
It can be. Fibro from before the late 1980s may contain asbestos and cannot be sanded or disturbed. We’ll tell you if we suspect it and work accordingly, or recommend an assessment first.
Can my original timber windows be saved?
Usually yes. Where the timber is sound they repaint well and last decades more. Where the sills or lower rails have gone, we’ll tell you what needs replacing before we paint.
How long does an exterior repaint take here?
One to two weeks on a typical single-storey home. Older houses with layered paint history sit at the longer end, because the preparation takes more time.
